Empty Beds explores the early era of change in Indian education ideology as it pertained to student health at Sherman Institute in Southern California between 1902 and 1922. Beginning with the establishment of Carlisle Indian School in 1879, nonreservation boarding schools earned a reputation for being physically unhealthy environments for Indian children. By the turn of the century, a growing recognition of the importance of student health in Indian education began to emerge throughout the country. Unlike other nonreservation boarding schools, Sherman Institute tried to contain the devastating effects of epidemic diseases, accidents, and illnesses that were common during the early decades of the twentieth century. Strict compliance with new Indian Office preventive health policies and the implementation of school-specific health practices resulted in a relatively healthy student population compared with other nonreservation schools.

The fact that the student population at Sherman Institute during the period between 1902 and 1922 evidenced good health is at odds with widespread perceptions that nonreservation boarding schools essentially functioned as death factories for Native American children. Empty Beds is the first comprehensive study of Indian student health at a nonreservation boarding school. Keller's exciting and provocative new conclusions will inspire a wide range of scholarship in this hitherto bypassed field of inquiry.

Planning the Family in Egypt: New Bodies, New Selves by Kamran Asdar Ali, ISBN 029270514X

"Kamran Ali, a Pakistani physician and anthropologist, takes an original and multifaceted approach to understanding the practicalities of family planning in Egypt."--Nancy Gallagher, author of Egypt's Other Wars: Epidemics and the Politics of Public HealthIn this ethnographic study, the author examines the policies and practices of family planning programs in Egypt to see how an elitist, Western-informed state attempts to create obliging citizens. The state sees voluntary compliance with the law for the common good as the cornerstone of modernity. Family planning programs are a training ground for the construction of self-disciplined individuals, and thus a rewarding area of study for the fate of social programs in developing countries. Through a careful examination of state-endorsed family planning practices in urban and rural contexts, the author shows us the pervasive, high-pressure persuasion of women, who are encouraged to think as individual decision makers of their immediate families... Political Networks: The Structural Perspective by David Knoke, ISBN 0521375525

This book examines almost two decades of research using the structural or network approach to political behavior. Network analysis begins with the assumption that the most important elements of political power are the relationships of influence and domination among social actors. Influence is the exchange of information about preferences and intentions; domination is the exchange of material sanctions to reward or punish compliance with commands. By examining the confluence of these two networks, analysts can develop a structural picture of the political process. David Knoke provides an overview of the work already done in the structural analysis of politics and the directions it will take in the future. Topics covered include voting decisions, social movements, formal organizations, community power systems, national elites and the world system of nation-states. Theoretical conceptualizations, empirical findings and topical research agendas are discussed in each of these areas. Political Networks: The Structural Perspective by David Knoke, ISBN 0521375525
